Environmental Protection Offices – Wexford
Johnstown Castle, Co. Wexford.
In 2012 FKM were engaged as mechanical contractors for the new Offices of the Environmental Protection Agency. For the design of their new offices the EPA strived to lead by example and prove that intelligent design can make a real effect on sustainability and environmental impact.
Along with Solar Panels, Wood Chip Boilers, Rain Water Harvesting, Heat Recovery, Energy Efficient Lighting, the building utilises the surroundings to ensure that no water, light or heating is wasted. Data is collected on the roof about the weather which is then used by the heating and ventilation systems to ensure maximum efficiency. Even the heat generated by the comms room is not wasted and excess heat is recovered to heat water to a practical 40 degrees.
Surplus heat is also sent to the ponds outside the beautifully landscaped grounds, in exchange for a passive source of cooling for the system and reducing electricity consumption.
